Is Graduate School for Game Design Worth It?

Once you’ve mastered form, space, color, and composition, the course moves on to teach you how to implement these skills into your games. Video game college students are actually placed in full-time jobs in their field of study, where they can learn from other designers currently in the industry and really get a feel for what being a designer is like. This ensures you’re not just leaving with a game development university degree, but actual experience to put on your resume. It depends on factors like individual aptitude, prior experience, and program rigor. A game design degree program involves a blend of creative and technical skills, including programming, art, and narrative design. The challenge lies in mastering these diverse elements to create engaging and functional interactive experiences.

The Computer Game Design program established by The College of Visual and Performing Arts offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The School of Game Development offers several degrees for students looking to break into the game industry using its development university program. Initially focused on web dev, Dustin was introduced to game design by a friend after college and was immediately attracted to the combination of technical skill and creativity required to make an awesome game. With an average salary of over $60,000 and plenty of growth predicted for the future, it’s easy to see why video game design is such a lucrative career option. This is because you’ll want to supplement your Computer science knowledge with either a minor in a design topic or be willing to study for a master’s degree in game design. You’ll likely be rewarded by such accomplishments by being highly sought after in the job market. This is because unlike some of the other universities on this list, UCLA has an extremely low acceptance rate of less than 20%. This means that aspiring students must graduate near the top of their high school class and have a strong interest in the game design along with a beefy amateur portfolio, which supports this.

The College of Engineering at MSU houses the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, which offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Science. Students in all programs will also take courses in Systems Design and Analysis, Data Analysis and Applications, and Theory and Algorithms. The BA program is project-based and explores topics such as the game design process, emerging interactive media, and production. Focus areas include Game Design, Games Graphics and Animation, and Game Development.

ETC also allows students across departments to enroll in individual courses to enhance their program of study. University of Wisconsin – Stout (UW-Stout) has programs for game designers across several colleges, departments, and schools. The College of Arts, Communication, and Social Sciences (CACHSS) houses the School of Art and Design, which serves more than 1,000 students led by 60 faculty members. The largest school of its kind in the entire upper Midwest, CACHSS Art and Design is home to the Design Department, which has a Game Design and Development (GDD) BFA and a cross-disciplinary Design MFA.

They offer the programs as undergraduate and graduate degrees, so they’re options no matter where you are in your education journey. The New York Film Academy has campuses all over the world, including Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East. The cross-disciplinary Games + Simulation Minor consists of 19 total credit hours, with collaborative courses between ETBD and the Art and Computer Science Departments.

The Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science at University of Denver (DU) houses the Computer Science Department, which allows students to specialize in just about any area. Also housed in the School of Engineering and Applied Science is the Digital Media Design (DMD) Program. Launched in 1998, this interdisciplinary program combines coursework from UPenn School of Design and the CIS Department. Leading to a Bachelor’s in Engineering and Science (BSE) with DMD Major, the program explores games, animation, interactive technologies, virtual reality design, and computer graphics.

At the end of the program, you’ll have an “industry-standard portfolio” to showcase on your hunt for a job. You’ll develop proficiencies with industry software—Zbrush, Unreal Engine, and 3D Studio Max to name a few. The School offers a diploma in Game Design (replete with a “professional quality online portfolio). Among these two-year programs are an Advanced Diploma of Professional Game Development (Game Art & Animation) and an Advanced Diploma of Professional Game Development (Game Programming).

Students in this program will complete a Music Technology Capstone/Senior Recital or a Game Design Capstone.
